Business Profile

"Theatre ... with a pinch of class" Bowler Crab is a theatre company which specialises in Shakespearean performance, producing UK tours as well as repertoire performances for schools, festivals, dining experiences, weddings and private events.

Founded in 2013 by Artistic Director Stephen John, the company's goal is to complete the Shakespearean canon. Bowler Crab is the resident theatre company of Half House Farm (C16th performance venue in Three Oaks) and The Mermaid Inn (600 year old inn situated in Rye, historically famous for a visit from Shakespeare's company in 1597).

Their theatrical style can be considered as a mixture of minimalism and traditionalism, bringing Shakespearean language to life using fresh creative perspectives on customary performance practices inspired by literary themes rather than excessive sets or special stage effects.

Dream 2022 Bowler Crab are back for our first 'full season' in almost three years! By popular demand, we are kicking off with A Midsummer Night's Dream this spring! This show will be Stephen John's fourth version of the play, having directed 'The Dream' in 2013, 2017 and 2019. Taking experiences and styles from all three past productions, this show blends the three into an energetic romp through Shakespeare's most popular comedy.

This comedy contains a world of magic, music and mayhem. Find yourself among trick-some fairies, enchanted lovers and ass-headed 'rude mechanicals' as Shakespeare's magical romantic comedy is performed in beautiful rhyming verse. A comic fairy tale with song, dance and humour galore.

A micro-tour indoors at a few of our usual haunts across the 1066 area spring 2022.
